217. Procurator Fiscal Lerwick to Rear-Admiral Fawckner Swarbacks Minn

13 April 1916

I have made so far the enquiry as to the body of the man found at Westfirth, Yell, on 27th March last, the result of which is that the body is that of a man clothed in the uniform of a man of the British Navy.

In the Daily Record of 27th March I notice in the list there given of men amissing from the British Cruiser Alcantara which was sunk in the North Sea on 29th February, the name of Duncan Bain. I think the body must be that of this Duncan Bain, as on his stockings was stamped the name ‘D. Ross’ [sic], and his arms were tattooed as follows:

Right arm: blue and red floral design with a heart, and clasped hands and the words ‘true love’ above this design, and on the

Left arm, a blue and red floral design with the name ‘Duncan’ within it.

To enable me to complete my enquiry I will be obliged by your informing me whether the description applies to a man of the Alcantara, and, if so, to give me the name, age, rating, and place of abode of deceased, and if possible the name and occupation of his father, and maiden surname of his mother. These are required for the registering by me in the Register of Deaths for North Yell and the completion of my inquiry.1
